Buying Parts and Having a Shop Install Them

Auto repair shops get their revenues from several things—mainly from the labor involved in doing a repair or replacement and from the part that they install. If you will notice, parts offered by these shops are more expensive than those that you will find in your local store or in online auto parts shops. Given, the parts that they offer are already available, so you don’t have to wait for a few days unlike when you shop online. But, the mark-up on these parts can sometimes be considerably huge.

One solution that many drivers try is to buy their own parts from the local shop and to bring the parts to the auto repair center for installation. Many shops and mechanics are okay with this, with some mechanics even favoring this practice in case the needed part is not available or is not easy to find. But, there are others who are not into this practice. Some of them will perform the job, but they will not provide you with a warranty for the part, sometimes even for labor. So, you will be at the mercy of your car. There are also some shops that will totally refuse to install a part that is not bought from them.

I haven’t heard of any rule or regulation that prosecutes auto repair shops that refuse to install a part because it isn’t bought from them. So, if you’re someone who wants to save on the high cost of replacement parts offered by shops by buying a cheaper one from your dealer, you need to be clear with the shop that will perform the service. If the shop will not agree, then you can always take your car to another shop that will, or do the installation yourself if you’re familiar with the process.

Mazda May Be Talking to Toyota About Hybrids

Mazda may be in talks with Toyota to develop hybrid vehicles for their line-up.
Mazda May Follow Suzuki, Mitsubishi With Alliance (Update2) - Bloomberg.com
Mazda has said it plans to introduce its own hybrid car, yet it also is in talks to use Toyota’s system, said Koji Endo, managing director of Advanced Research Japan in Tokyo.

Supplying the system would add volume and cut costs for Toyota, Endo said.

“Even if there were talks of any alliance, I wouldn’t be able to speak about it,” Toyota Executive Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada said Dec. 14.
Mazda, like other car makers, are being pushed towards fuel efficiency technology and developing a hybrid system on their own may be just too expensive to do it on their own.

The article points out Mazda has been working with Ford primarily for years as Ford owned a sizeable stake in the company. But with Ford selling off a big chunk, Mazda will need to look to other car companies to partner with in order to move forward.

Warning Signs of Brakes Wearing Down

Safe driving is not only about following the correct speed or following traffic rules – it is more than that. You must have at least an idea of the importance of your car parts particularly the brakes. Car brakes have also their wear and tear; you must know when the appropriate time to have it change or recognize signs of them wearing down.

Being a woman is not an excuse. You might think…oh, it’s my husband’s job to know that. Anyone who drives must be aware of these things. It is not necessary to do it yourself, as long as you know how to detect the need for a brake check-up is far better than driving around, obliviously putting you and your family’s life at risk.

Warning Signs

1.       Weak response when stepping on the brakes

If you notice that stepping on your pedal brakes is not as responsive as it used to then it is something to be considered. Or perhaps, it sinks towards the floor while stepping on it. Experiencing these scenario are indications that brake change is imminent. Reasons for reduced responsiveness of your brakes may include leaking in your brake system, air leak (hose), and brake fluid leak.

2.       Pulling Effect

Pulling effect means, if you try to step on the brake pedal and your vehicle is pulled to one side – it may be because of an uneven lining. There could also be presence of foreign matters in your brake fluid. That being said, your brake system may need adjustment or a need for fluid draining and replacement.

3.       Loud Grinding or Growling Sound

When you hear a sharp howling noise while braking – this means your brake pads are completely worn out. The growling noise is the result of the disc and caliper rubbing together. Ignoring this can scratch your rotors causing the uneven surface which will actually incur bigger expenses. Your mechanic will advise you to have your rotors “turned” or replaced. Turned is a process that evens the rotor surface.

4.       Vibrating or Pulsating Brake Pedal

Vibration is usually a sign of warped rotors although this could also mean a problem with the alignment.

If your anti-lock brakes are not engaged and vibration occurs while braking, this is a sigh of warped rotors. Severe use of your brake system (steep-mountain driving or towing) causes warped rotors. Activities like driving in steep mountains or towing and the like produces tremendous friction which is the cause of warping. And, once the brake pads are unable to grab an even surface, vibration occurs. If being in this situation is inevitable, make sure to take a break every now and then to allow breaks to cool off.

The braking system is the most commonly overlooked section by car owners which is supposedly tantamount to safety. Thus, knowing when to have a brake system check-up or learning the signs of a worn out brake system ensures your safety in as much as avoid possibility of costly repairs. Importantly, circumvent any untoward circumstances or any types of road accidents just because of mere brake system negligence.

ICE

Sometimes the unthinkable happens here in Pineville… A terrible accident and those involved aren’t able to provide our local Charlotte rescuers with emergency contact information. There are people who must be contacted to arrange help, give consent to treatment, inform paramedics of medical conditions, allergies or medications.
Too often, Charlotte police and rescue workers must sift through pockets, glove compartments, wallets, purses and cell phone directories for clues – often wasting precious time.
A brilliantly simple solution is now spreading around the globe: ICE. ICE – standing for ‘In Case of Emergency’, is a way of identifying emergency contacts in your cell phone directory.

Simply put ‘ICE’ before a contact name, like ‘ICE – Dad’, ‘ICE – Nancy’, or ‘ICE – Doctor Roberts’. Rescuers will be able to quickly identify your emergency contacts, saving valuable time.
It’s easy and just takes a few minutes to designate some ICE contacts in your cell phone. Remember to keep the listings current.
From your friends at Carolina Tire & Auto in Pineville NC, we’d like you to be as safe as possible while out on the road. Give us a call any time for great automotive advice:

Ford Develops Smart Charging for Plug In Hybrids

Plug-in hybrids are coming, and if the car companies and government have anything to do with, are coming very soon.  But, in order to be successful, plugging in your car is going to take a bit of co-operation between government, automakers, and utility companies.  Ford is working in partnership with  Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), an independent nonprofit organization to continue to develop and test plug-ins and how theyre going to affect the grid in the coming years.

Part of the technology that Ford has been working on is the vehicle-to-grid communications and control systems.   The control system allows the operator to program the vehicle charging station to recharge the vehicle during off-peak hours, when rates are cheaper.  It also allows the car owner to tell the car how long to charge for.  Ford announced they now have such a system.

When the vehicle plugs in, the plug-in hybrid will communicate directly with the smart grid via smart meters through wireless networking.  The owner can then use the touch screen to make the most informed choices on when and how long to charge the vehicle.

Ford is working with utility companies across North America to develop the smart grid and smart meters to work with their plug-in hybrids.

Ford is partnering with utility companies across North America including:
 • Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)
 • U.S. Department of Energy
 • Southern California Edison
 • New York Power Authority
 • Consolidated Edison of New York
 • American Electric Power of Columbus, Ohio
 • Alabama Power of Birmingham, Ala.; and its parent, Atlanta-based Southern Company
 • Progress Energy of Raleigh, N.C.
 • DTE Energy of Detroit
 • National Grid of Waltham, Mass.
 • Pepco Holdings
 • New York State Energy and Research Development Authority, a state agency
 • Hydro-Quebec, the largest electricity generator in Canada
Ford is also helping to work on re-charging when youre away from home.  They hope that recharging can be as easy as plugging in and swiping a credit card at your local mall or parking lot.

Ford has two grants from the Department of Energy to help it on its way.  The first grant is for $30 million and is used to help fund Fords collaboration with utility partners across the nation with an expansion of a vehicle demonstration and grid integration program.

Ford is also set to receive a $62.7 million DOE grant for production of an electric-drive transaxle that could be used for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles at Fords Van Dyke transmission manufacturing facility in Sterling Heights, Mich. This grant will be matched by Ford.

DOE grant funds also will support production of electric-drive system components at Ford supplier Magna, for the Ford Focus battery electric vehicle, as well as Johnson Controls-Saft, which will supply high-voltage batteries for Fords plug-in hybrid vehicle in 2012.

Ford plans to invest nearly $14 billion in advanced technology vehicles in the next seven years, retooling its U.S. plants more quickly to produce fuel-efficient vehicles and help meet the new, rigorous fuel economy requirements.

Honda Hybrid SUV

You would think that Honda, being one of the first hybrid developers over a decade ago, would have built a hybrid SUV by now. But, so far, Honda has shied away from the SUV and crossover hybrid market.

Why?

Ford has shown that a small, fuel efficient hybrid can be popular. The hybrid system from Honda is certainly developed enough, yet there is still no Honda hybrid SUV on the horizon.

Honda hasnt been afraid to experiment with their hybrid line-up. The first hybrid was a two-seater (Insight), while the next was more practical (Honda Civic Hybrid). The third hybrid from Honda was the Accord Hybrid, built on the premise of delivering more power for less fuel, but that failed. And then Honda went on to develop the Honda Insight II, a more economical hybrid only car to compete with the Prius.

Next in line is a Honda Fit, an even smaller hybrid, but more likely cheaper option. Considering the sales data seems to show the Honda Insight II is competing with the Honda Civic Hybrid, I wonder what the Honda Fit Hybrid will compete with?

So, why not a SUV Honda Hybrid? Or perhaps a crossover hybrid? Is there a limitation on the size of the vehicle that wont allow the IMA system to be laid into the Pilot or CR-V? Would Honda have to develop a dual-mode hybrid system to place into these larger vehicles?

Only Honda can answer these questions. Its been over a decade, and Honda has shown a willingness to experiment with their hybrid products. It may be time to show how fuel efficient these SUV and Crossovers can be by giving them a hybrid option.

GT Sprint Double victory for MTM Audi R8 LMS and championship lead extended

By Johan Laubscher

The Superstars GT Sprint Series headed to Imola for its penultimate round of the season. MTM Motorsport continued their good form with the Audi R8 LMS.

Thomas Schöffler, MTM’s lead driver, arrived at Imola as the GT Sprint championship points leader. The team’s aim was to defend his championship lead this weekend, ahead of the finale in October. He was joined by Johan Kristoffersson this weekend, sharing the controls of the #45 Audi R8 LMS. This was the second time that Kristoffersson had joined Schöffler and MTM this season, as he had also raced with the team during round two at Brno in May.

They qualified on pole for race one, followed by second on the grid for race two.

The two races were held on Sunday, with the first race seeing the Audi MTM pairing finishing in first place. They backed up that result with another victory in race two.

It has been another very good weekend for MTM and Thomas Schöffler remains the championship points leader as the team heads to the finale.

The final round of the Superstars GT Sprint Series will take place at Vallelunga from 12-13 October.

Step Up and Last Three Rounds I Dare Ya!

So then, will no one step up and attempt to compete with the Prius???

Hondas Prius-Fighter Is Stuck in First - BusinessWeek
So far this year, the Prius is outselling the Insight by nearly 6 to 1. Other carmakers are watching closely. General Motors, for one, is reviewing its entire hybrid strategy. In late November, GM shelved plans for a 53-mpg Prius fighter for its bread-and-butter Chevrolet brand.
With the Insight failing to compete with the Prius, will no others be able to challenge the Toyota dominance in the hybrid world?  Toyota sells 3 out of every 4 hybrids in the US.  1 of ever 2 hybrids sold is a Prius.  1 out of every 100 (or a bit more, really) cars sold in the US is a Prius.

Thats a lot to overcome, but it should still be possible.  If the rest of the auto market is competitive across the various types of cars, why cant hybrids be more competitive?

The cost is a big challenge, of course.  A decade of sales gives Toyota a big advantage in technology advancements and engineering cheaper solutions.

Also GM and others may decide it just isnt worth it.  Nissan has decided to work on building all electric, while Audi has focused on diesel.  GM is hoping to beat Toyota to the plug-in market with the Volt.  Ford and Honda seem to be the only real competitors in the hybrid  world, but theyre so far back that Goliath seems to be winning without even noticing hes in a fight.

Fisker Looks for More Millions to Upgrade Delaware Plant

Fisker is looking for more government money. After receiving almost $529 million from the federal loan program, they are looking for the state of Delaware to kick in another $9 million in a grant.

The grant money will be used to offset utility costs while it upgrades the GM facility in Newport using another $12.5 million from a convertible loan.

Theres nothing really new about this sort of thing. The major automakers have relied on loans, grants, tax breaks and other money from the government for decades to build cars. The only difference here is the size of the automaker and the single type of car they are working on (plug-in).

Lexus HS 250h Gets Five Star Rating for Safety

The NHTSA has awarded the 2010 Lexus HS 250h a five star rating for both front impact for the driver and right front passenger positions and side impact for the driver and left rear passenger positions.

The safercar.gov website shows the HS 250h gets five stars except for the rollever test in which it received four stars.

Press Release from Lexus follows:

TORRANCE, Calif. (Jan 6, 2010) – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the Lexus 2010 HS 250h, the world’s first dedicated luxury hybrid, a rating of five out of five stars for both front impact for the driver and right front passenger positions and side impact for the driver and left rear passenger positions.

The New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), a consumer information program created by NHTSA, rates vehicles to determine crash and rollover safety. The crash test ratings are gathered during controlled crash and rollover tests conducted at the NHTSA research facilities. The announcement was released on the NHTSA website www.safercar.gov.

According to Lexus, the body structure of the HS 250h plays a key role in the fundamental safety characteristics. To help protect the driver and passengers, the body is designed to be strong but strategically resilient to help absorb and distribute energy in the event of a crash. High tension steel components are carefully located in the body structure, doors and other areas to help ensure strength in key areas.

Also incorporated is a standard class-leading 10-airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) with dual-stage front airbags and knee airbags for driver and front passenger, side curtain airbags, and both front and rear seat-mounted side airbags to help protect front and rear passengers in certain types of severe frontal or side collisions. The front passenger’s twin-chamber airbag helps disperse the forces applied to the passenger immediately after deployment. Additionally, front and outer rear seatbelts incorporate pretensioners with force-limiters to help protect occupants in the event of certain severe frontal collisions. Active front headrests are also standard.

The HS 250h, which went on sale in August 2009, has an impressive 187 total system horsepower and has achieved EPA estimated fuel economy ratings of 35 mpg city and 34 mpg on the highway for a combined 35 mpg utilizing regular 87-octane gasoline - an 80 percent better city mpg rating compared to the average near luxury car.

DTM ‘Rocky’s bull’s eye DTM Champion with Audi

Audi Press Release

 •          Mike Rockenfeller crowns strong season with early title win
 •          Country life decelerates the Audi factory driver
 •          Head of Audi Sport Ullrich: “Everyone’s delighted for him to have won the title”

Ingolstadt/Zandvoort, September 29, 2013 – Mike Rockenfeller has extended his biography by a decisive item in the second from last round of the 2013 DTM season at Zandvoort (the Netherlands). The 29-year-old Audi factory driver clinched an early title win in the most popular international touring car series DTM. A portrait of ‘Rocky.’

“My aim this year is simple: Of course I want to become champion,” said Mike Rockenfeller at the beginning of the season. The absence of the mischievous grin that is typically found on his face showed that he was not uttering a hackneyed phrase but was dead-serious. And now, after six DTM years, he has actually made it happen. Mike Rockenfeller from Audi Sport Team Phoenix sealed the title one race before the finale at Hockenheim on October 20. Following triumphs in the Porsche Carrera Cup (2004) and in the FIA GT Championship (2005) plus victories in the classic 24-hour races at Le Mans and Daytona (2010), this marks the next success in his career.

A surprise Champion? Not really. Last year – his second one in a current-generation DTM car – in fourth place of the standings, he was the best Audi driver and thus finally joined the group of favorites for the title. In the current season, he underpinned his Championship ambitions at an early stage. On winning round two at Brands Hatch (GB), the driver of the yellow-green Schaeffler Audi RS 5 DTM captured the top spot in the standings for the first time and is the only driver who has scored points in all nine races of the season so far – consistency having been one of the keys to success.

Even when, for a change, Rockenfeller was not cheering on the podium – as he was as the runner-up at Lausitz and on clinching his historic victory at the DTM’s premiere at Moscow – he set exclamation marks as a race driver. At the Red Bull Ring, ‘Rocky’ battled his way forward from 13th to fourth place. The city street race at the Norisring he tackled from the last row on the grid following a transmission change and in the end took a strong fifth place. On a wet track at the Nürburgring, Rockenfeller had to get out of a rival’s way in turn one and as a result found himself running at the rear of the field. Thanks to a tactical move by his squad at the command post ‘Rocky’ recovered and saw the checkered flag in fourth place.

Stay calm and relaxed even when all seems to be lost. Never lose your cool. Never give up. An exceptionally high basic speed, combined with a healthy dose of self-confidence and optimism that inspires the team even in difficult times – aside from his high level of technical knowledge, strong team spirit and, naturally, plenty of talent are the major strengths of the new DTM Champion.

“Rocky not only has the speed you need for titles in the DTM but drives in an incredibly clever way as well,” says Team Director Ernst Moser as he praises the level-headedness of his fast protégé. “Obviously, he’d love to win every race. But, not least thanks to his wealth of experience, Mike knows when it’s more prudent not to force the issue in a situation.” The perfect interaction between Rockenfeller and the engineers of Audi Sport and Audi Sport Team Phoenix is another element of success that Moser has identified. “Rocky has the ability to provide very precise descriptions of how the Audi RS 5 DTM performs in different track sectors and thus can squeeze the optimum out of the car together with the technical crew,” explains the team boss and, this said, goes on to name one of Rockenfeller’s weaknesses. “Sometimes he goes overboard with his tendency toward perfectionism and puts himself under nervous pressure. But whenever this happens his engineer Jürgen Jungklaus quickly brings him back to reality.”

Mike Rockenfeller gathered initial experience in a car at the tender age of eight when he was driving a VW beetle around the grounds of his grandparents’ farm. When, at the age of ten, he climbed into a kart for the first time just for fun he immediately realized: “Racing is my great passion.” Following six years in karting, Rockenfeller switched to Formula König and immediately made a strong showing on clinching the pole position and fourth place in the first-ever car race in his life. Just a little later, Porsche secured the services of the budding talent that had just come of age. Together with the Swabian marque ‘Rocky’ competed in the USA as well and developed a liking for the country and its traditional race tracks such as Laguna Seca that has lasted to this day. December 2006 marked the beginning of a new chapter in Rockenfeller’s career. Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich signed the German, thus paving the way for him to achieve the biggest successes his career.

“Mike’s not only a fast race driver but a perfect fit for Audi outside the cockpit as well,” says Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. With his on-track performances – above all, obviously, his victory at Le Mans and now his DTM title – he has more than fulfilled all the hopes we’ve pinned on him. In all his years with Audi, Mike’s had to cope with a few setbacks, so that makes our joy about his title even greater. Everybody at Audi Sport is delighted for him to have achieved this success.”

As a way of balancing his turbulent daily life as a race driver, Rockenfeller values the decelerating effect of country life. Rockenfeller, who grew up in Neuwied in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate with both sets of grandparents being farmers, is now living in Landschlacht on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance with his partner Susanne. Enjoying a meal at a good restaurant, watching a movie at a theater or simply lounging around all day wearing shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops – these are the ways in which he prefers to recharge his batteries for the next races in the little bit of free time he has. An environment he is used to, a home – is important to him. That is why he takes his ‘own four walls’ in the form of his motorhome to the track whenever he can. There is just one catch about it: He does not have the right driver’s license that would allow him to move the large vehicle. Finally getting this license, besides winning the DTM title, has been at the very top of his agenda for 2013. So his sights are now set on the next aim.

Chevy Volt Will Launch in D C

The Chevy Volt, the extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV), will be launching in Washington D.C., California and Michigan later this year.

Like the Nissan Altima Hybrid, the locations GM has chosen to roll out the Volt have immediate and obvious reasons. If anything, Michigan may be the most surprising location, even though the Volt will be made there.

With a limited production GM had to decide where to sell the Volt at first. D.C. has obvious political value, while California has obvious green and PR potential.

Read more about it from the press release by GM.

WASHINGTON – Chevrolet announced that greater Washington D.C. will be an initial launch market for the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range. The nation’s capital and its suburbs join California and Michigan as the initial retail markets where Chevrolet will sell the Volt to consumers.

“The Chevrolet Volt demonstrates our commitment to the electrification of the automobile,” said Tom Stephens, GM vice chairman, Global Product Operations. “So far, we have invested more than $700 million in the U.S. to reinforce our leadership in this new technology.”

Chevrolet also announced a development and demonstration program with D.C.-area utilities Pepco and Dominion to introduce customers to electric vehicles and establish vehicle charging programs.

“Concentrating Volt sales in these three key initial markets allows us to give our first customers a high-quality experience,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet general manager. “In addition to geographical considerations, each market also has progressive local and state government leaders and utility partners who are crucial in bringing electric vehicles to market.”

Chevrolet will deliver more than 100 Volts to several utilities across the U.S. – including Pepco and Dominion, which serve Washington D.C. and its suburbs – as part of an extended demonstration program. The overall program includes 500 charging stations that will be installed for residential, business and public use. They will be used to learn more about the installation process, vehicle charging and to gauge customer feedback.

The program is made possible with a grant of more than $30 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from the Transportation Electrification Initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Energy. Chevrolet has announced similar partnerships with several utilities in California and Michigan, as well as the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).

The Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle with extended-range capability. It is designed to drive up to 40 miles on electricity without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions. When the Volt’s lithium-ion battery is depleted, an engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range if there is no access to an electrical outlet to recharge the battery, providing peace of mind by eliminating range anxiety. Volt production begins later this year, and pricing has not been announced.

Testing in real conditions

The Chevrolet Volt has already logged more than a quarter-million test miles on pre-production vehicles, some of which are in service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Accomplishments include:

* Chevrolet is using OnStar technology to refine the development of the current fleet of about 80 pre-production vehicles
* Testing under extreme climates and conditions, including hot-weather testing in Death Valley, cold-weather testing in northern Canada; and mountain testing at Pikes Peak
* The building of more than 300 pre-production battery packs

Technology beyond the battery

Chevrolet is expanding the Volt ownership experience with a smartphone (Droid by Motorola, Apple iPhone and BlackBerry Storm) application by OnStar that gives Volt owners 24/7 connection and control of vehicle function and OnStar features remotely.

Through Volt’s mobile application, drivers can set or check charging, manually set grid-friendly charge modes for off-peak times, pre-condition the interior temperature using electricity and not gasoline, check EV range and more.

Other driver-friendly technologies include touch-sensitive controls on the center stack and screen; a fully digital interface that allows two-way interaction, personalization and access to information; and real-time feedback that provides guidance on how to drive more efficiently.

Chevrolet grows its family of small and compact cars

Chevrolet presents its family of fuel-efficient small cars at the auto show – including the Spark five-door mini car, Aveo RS show car and Cruze compact sedan. Revealed earlier this month in Detroit, the Aveo RS show car features a European-inspired hot hatch design that strongly hints at the upcoming Aveo production car.

Here’s a deeper look at the cars:

Chevrolet Spark : The five-door Chevrolet Spark, the smallest member of Chevrolet’s family of cars, brings style, roominess and versatility to a segment of extremely fuel-efficient small cars. Spark will provide great fuel economy, and its trim size makes it very agile in all kinds of driving conditions while still feeling substantial on the open road. The U.S. production version of the Spark will go on sale in early 2012.

“This small vehicle makes a big statement,” said Margaret Brooks, Chevrolet marketing director for small cars. “With its fresh, youthful approach, we believe Spark will appeal to customers who want excellent fuel economy, functionality and style at an affordable price.”

More details on the U.S. version of the Spark will be announced at a later date.

Chevrolet Aveo RS show car : The Aveo RS show car provides a glimpse of what designers have in mind for the future production car. Its electric Boracay Blue finish, motorcycle-inspired exposed headlamps and taillamps, low roofline, fender flares, large wheels and tires, and dual-cockpit interior hint at the next-generation Aveo.

“The current Aveo is a major player in Chevrolets global small-car portfolio,” said Campbell. “Our intent with the Aveo RS show car is to demonstrate Chevrolets vision and design potential for a small car we think customers will love.”

Focusing on Aveo’s target audience of young buyers, Chevrolet gave the show car a sporty appearance inside and out. An aggressive front fascia; clean, uninterrupted body side lines; an integrated rear roof spoiler; wide stance; and large, 19-inch, five-spoke wheels with a gun metal metallic Chevrolet logo and Boracay Blue brake calipers suggest upscale style and dynamic handling.

The Boracay Blue continues inside, with accent stitching in the instrument panel dual cockpit, front and rear door panels, gear shift boot, parking brake and seat bolster.

The Aveo RS show car features the same small-displacement 1.4L Ecotec turbocharged engine that will be available in the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. Delivering 138 horsepower (103 kW), it performs like two powerplants in one, with the fuel economy of a small engine and the performance of a larger one. In the Aveo RS show car, the 1.4L turbo is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Chevrolet has previously announced the new Aveo will be built at Orion Assembly in Orion Township, Mich., in 2011, a move that will restore 1,200 jobs to Southeast Michigan. Plant retooling is scheduled to begin later this year.

Chevrolet Cruze : The North American production version of the 2011 Cruze compact sedan makes its first visit to Washington show-goers. Already on sale in Asia and Europe with strong market acceptance, the Cruze has been refined for America, bringing a midsize car presence to the compact sedan segment.

Cruze will deliver many segment-leading features, more interior room and more cargo capacity than the competition, as well as upscale amenities such as Bluetooth, USB and navigation. It offers midsize roominess, safety and amenities with the fuel economy and expected price of a compact car. Cruze features 10 standard air bags and has achieved five-star safety ratings in every market where it is sold.

Cruze is expected to deliver segment-leading fuel economy with a new Ecotec 1.4L I-4 turbo with variable valve timing – including up to 40 mpg on the highway with a high-efficiency model. The all-new Cruze will be built in Lordstown, Ohio beginning in the third quarter.

Thunderhill 25 Hours Audi count up to three cars as Rotek Racing confirmed with Audi TT RS entry

By Johan Laubscher

The 25 Hours of Thunderhill will be taking place in December. A third Audi entry has been included in the latest update of the provisional entry list.

The first draft of the provisional entry list was revealed on 24 September and that list included two Audi entries. The original two entries were both from GMG Racing, who are entering two Audi R8 LMS cars in the ES class.

At the time Rotek Racing mentioned their intention to compete in the race on their Facebook page, but they were not listed on the entry list as of yet. Rotek Racing has been campaigning an Audi TT RS (VLN SP4T) car in the German VLN Endurance Championship this year, the very same car that was used by 034 Motorsport at the 2012 25 Hours of Thunderhill. The latest update of the provisional entry list was published last night and it now officially includes the Rotek Racing TT RS, also entered in the ES class, thus upping the Audi count to three cars in total.

No driver line-ups have been announced yet, but it is very exciting to see three factory built Audi Sport Customer Racing cars already on the grid. The 2013 25 Hours of Thunderhill is scheduled to take place from 7-8 December.

The provisional entry list can be seen HERE.

Audi teams on the provisional entry list (as of 28/10/2013):

GMG Racing:
#8 Audi R8 LMS - GMG Racing
#14 Audi R8 LMS - GMG Racing

Rotek Racing:
#24 Audi TT RS SP4T - Rotek Racing

Toyota Prius Number One in Japan

The 2010 Toyota Prius has topped the sales charts in Japan (excluding minicars with displacements of less than 660 cc) for the month of May according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA). (Found via GCC).

The Prius doubled sales from last May, hitting 10,915 units sold. The Honda Insight was the first hybrid to become a top seller in Japan in April, but the Prius has surpassed the Insight, pushing it down to third after the Honda Fit. I cant imagine Honda is too upset with that since they occupy the first two spots.

According to some reports, Toyota has over 100,000 pre-orders to fill for the Prius. Which means that as long as they keep building the Prius at this rate, they should stay atop the rankings for quite a while.

Carburetor Adjustments How to Adjust Your Carburetor After a Carburetor Rebuild

This article will explain to you how to adjust a carburetor after rebuilding one. You can also use these instructions to adjust rebuilt carburetor after you buy one. Most of the carburetor adjustments are preset if you buy a rebuilt one rather than rebuilding one and having to find the specifications to adjust it to. After installing the carburetor on the vehicle, you will still need to check these adjustments. Although the rebuilt carburetors have been preset, they still have to be adjusted properly or your vehicle will not run, as it should.

Once you set the carburetor on the vehicle and tighten, everything down the first adjustment to this carburetor will be to the choke system. On a cold engine hit, the throttles cable a couple of times and see if the choke plate snaps shut. When it does start the vehicle up and watch the choke pull off in operation. Some carburetors have two choke pull offs operated by the engine vacuum engine. Normally after a carburetor rebuild a choke angle gage is used to adjust these pull offs. We are going to presume that a carburetor choke angle gage was not used and adjust this carburetor’s choke pull off by sight and sound.

As the engine starts and is, idling high because of the cold engine check and adjust the carburetors fast idle speed settings. Adjust the fast idle to specifications. With a Phillips head screwdriver, adjust the choke pull off by turning the screw clock wise to lean the mixture out. Turning the screw counter clockwise, you will be richening up the pull off setting. As the carburetor is warming up after a couple of minutes hit the carburetors throttle once and your choke linkage should kick down to your base idle speed setting. Adjust your carburetors base idle speed to specification and at this time adjust your carburetors air conditioning idle by turning on the air condition and setting that ac idle to specifications.

Carburetor adjusting is a skill that can be learned over a long period. I understand carburetors are no longer installed on today’s cars but I have seen many older cars still on the roads today. The last carburetor adjustment to do now is the air fuel mixture screws or screw depending on the type of carburetor you have. This carburetor adjustment is what you can call fine-tuning the mixture screws. Turn the car off and screw each carburetor mixture screw all of the way in making sure not to over tighten them. Now with your carburetor-adjusting tool screw both screws all the way out three complete turns. Start the car and slowly turn the carburetor adjusting screw in a quarter of a turn each time until you hear the engine begin to lower its base idle. Turn the screw back out slow enough to get that last little RPM rise and stop. Do the same to the second carburetor screw if equipped.

I hope this article will assist you in learning how to adjust your carburetor after a carburetor rebuild or after replacing your vehicle with a rebuilt carburetor.

Audi R8 LMS Cup Press Release

 •          Fongs third place finish in Macau seals title ahead of Alex Yoong
 •          Edoardo Mortara wins round 11 ahead of André Couto and Fong
 •          Audi R8 LMS Cup announces 2014 race calendar and contract extensions for Yoong and Marchy Lee

Macau, November 10, 2013 – A dramatic and wet final round of the Audi R8 LMS Cup saw Hong Kong rising star, Adderly Fong, clinch the overall drivers championship. Holding third position from start to finish behind guest drivers Edoardo Mortara and André Couto, Fong was able to secure the maximum points amongst the regular drivers and overtake Malaysian Alex Yoong at the top of the leaderboard. The tight and technical Macau street circuit was even more de-manding because of the slick track conditions.

"It is great to see Adderly [Fong] secure the championship. He came to the weekend with a small chance but he made no mistakes and drove consistently. He deserves it. It is also great to see an Audi dealership team (KLM Group) win this years title. Marchy (Lee) showed that he will be strong here next week in the Macau GP as he posted the quickest lap time today", said Rene Koneberg, Director of Audi Sport customer racing Asia. He added: "Next years calendar shows the exciting further expansion of our cup across Asia, with 3 stops in China and 3 outside, including a new race weekend in Fuji, Japan. In China we will have support races for the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the German Touring Car Championship (DTM)."

At the start of round 11, Macau racing veteran, Mortara, quickly pulled away from his fellow Brothers Racing Team (BRT) driver Couto, who solidified second position. Behind them the drivers championship was intensifying. Fong was followed closely by "Franky" Cheng Congfu and Marchy Lee. Lee put a lot of pressure on Congfu who eventually lost the perfect line and drove into the barrier, allowing Lee to dive down the inside. Congfus race was ended here, and Lee had clean air to cut into Fongs lead. The final four laps underlined the competitive nature of the series, with Lee shadowing Fong through every turn. Yet, it was Fong who showed driving maturity to hold Lee off and cross the line for the championship. With the 25 points he earned as the best cup driver, Fong finishes the season with 188 points ahead of Yoong (186) and Marchy Lee (164). Macau winner Mortara and second Couto were not points scoring due to their guest driver status.

Philip Ma won the amateur race in Macau ahead of the overall amateur champion Alex Au, with Eric K finishing in third place.

Fong has had an exceptional second season in the 2013 Audi R8 LMS Cup. Showing driving maturity beyond his young age, Fong has maintained consistency throughout the series in which he has been placed outside of a podium on only two occasions. It was a tough day for Yoong though. The Malaysian had a very strong season with four race wins. Coming to Macau he led the championship. But his accident during qualifying damaged his car beyond repair, so that he was not able to compete and score valuable points in the final round today.

But there was good news for Yoong as well. As Audi Sport customer racing Asia an-nounced the extension of the contracts for both Alex Yoong and Marchy Lee for the 2014 season.

Next years competition will see the cup expand even further across Asia with the exciting inclusion of a race weekend in Fuji, Japan. It will also be notable as the first race of the season will take place outside of China at Inje, South Korea. Please see below for the 2014 calendar.

Audi R8 LMS Cup 2014 Race Calendar (Provisional)

*to be confirmed

Release Date: November 12, 2013 (131110, Version 1)

Adderly Fong:

"I actually couldnt sleep last night. In 2011 I had a good race here, which gave me an idea of what the track is like. Ive only driven the Audi for 20 laps in the rain before. I had no clue I would finish on top of the championship, I tried to drive as hard as I could. I took every corner one by one, and I am very happy to have fin-ished as champion in Macau."

Edoardo Mortara:

"Congratulations to Adderly!! It was a pretty difficult race due to the conditions. With street circuits those conditions are even trickier. I tried to push quite hard at the beginning. It was a pleasure to be able to compete together with André at Macau for the same team. Thank you to Ren Wei from Brothers Racing Team for giving me the opportunity to drive here."

André Couto:

"I am satisfied with second place. My car was very nervous in the rain. During the race I tried to push the same as Edoardo [Mortara]. At some point I saw that I could not catch him anymore, so I thought just bring the car home and secure first and second place for Brothers Racing Team. I am happy to be on the podium."

Alex Yoong:

"It is very difficult day for me. I had a very good season. At the same time I am sad that I did not win it in the end. But I am very happy for Adderly [Fong] and he has won fair and square."

Marchy Lee:

"Well done Adderly!! He deserves the championship. This race was a good race for me, I really tried my best. Yesterdays qualifying didnt go so smooth. I wanted to show everyone I was better than my fifth place in qualifying yesterday. My season wasnt very good because I have not been so consistent this year but I will try again next year."

Alex Au:

"My happiest moment of the season was when, during an interview, I found out that I was champion. That was quite a memorable moment. This is my first time in Macau. It is very exciting to race this circuit. It is very narrow but I had the luxury of racing without too much pressure."

Rahel Frey:

"It was a challenge to race on this very fast, technical and sometimes even dangerous street circuit. Every driver has to decide individually how much risk they want to take. It was a very nice experience and I am happy that I have now done Macau!! And when I come back next time, I will know my way better."

Massimo Vignali:

"It was a rollercoaster season with a lot of ups and downs for me. It was my first season in sprint racing and I learnt a lot. I hope I can come back next year and improve more. To race in Macau was really a highlight of the season, not so many people get this chance. It was memorable."

FIA Press Release

The FIA President, Jean Todt, opened the meeting by thanking Matko Bolanca, President of the Croatian Car & Karting Federation (CCKF), and Zrinko Gregurek, Secretary General of the CCKF and WMSC member, for their hospitality and for hosting the FIA family.

The following decisions were taken by the World Motor Sport Council:

FIA WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP

In order to increase competitiveness, from 2014 the title of FIA World Endurance Manufacturers’ Champion will be awarded to the manufacturer scoring the greatest number of points with two cars (three cars if under Article 16.A) in the general classification.

The 2014 Sporting Regulations will be adjusted in order to take into consideration the new LMP1 Technical Regulations which will be implemented next season, taking into consideration the new distinction between the light category cars for privateers only (LMP-L) and the Hybrid category cars for both manufacturers and privateers (LMP-H), and the allocation of energy.

GT

The principles of the convergence between the current GTE cars (Le Mans) and the FIA GT3 have been commonly defined by the FIA and ACO and agreed by all the GT manufacturers. The aim is to present the new GT Technical Regulations, based on new categories (GT+ and GT), at the WMSC in June 2014 for implementation in 2016.

DTM Audi ready for final sprint in DTM title fight

Audi Press Release

 •          Mike Rockenfeller travels to Oschersleben as leader of the standings
 •          Timo Scheider has won at venue near Magdeburg twice before
 •          Head of DTM Dieter Gass: “Aiming for a solid team performance”

Ingolstadt, September 6, 2013 – Round eight now marks the beginning of the hot phase in the battle for the DTM title. Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller is traveling to Oschersleben (September 13 to 15) with an advantage of 35 points. The squad from Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm is banking on a strong team performance in the final sprint of the season.

Mike Rockenfeller and his brand colleagues have fondest memories of the 3.696-kilometer track near Magdeburg – first and foremost, Timo Scheider. He has contested a total of 13 races at Oschersleben before and thus holds the top mark in the current driver field. Scheider won the race at Oschersleben in his two championship-winning years of 2008 and 2009. Mattias Ekström entered his name on the winners’ list in 2011 and Mike Rockenfeller, in his second race, celebrated his first-ever DTM podium position there in May 2007.

Now the 29-year-old German is traveling to Oschersleben as the leader of the standings. The parameters before the race are positive: Rockenfeller has a 35-point advantage over his closest rival Christian Vietoris and 75 points are yet to be awarded. If Rockenfeller consecutively scores again in the eighth race he will be able to create an optimum starting base for the remaining two races at Zandvoort and Hockenheim.

Since the DTM’s comeback in 2000 the circuit at Oschersleben has been a venue on the series’ calendar of events and has made for thrilling races on numerous occasions. A notorious track section is the narrow left-right combination at the end of the start-finish straight, which is conducive to extremely close maneuvers. Aside from the finish straight, the back-straight offers a good opportunity for using the Drag Reduction System (DRS) that flattens the rear wing flap angle when the driver pushes a button on the steering wheel. Ideal for the fans is the total view of the infield from several grandstands, which assures that they will not miss any of the actions by the DTM race drivers.

Tickets for all DTM races of the 2013 season are available at www.audi-motorsport.com/dtm. In many countries of the world fans can watch qualifying and the race live on the DTM’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/dtmint.

In Germany, ARD will broadcast live on ‘Das Erste:’ qualifying on Saturday (September 14) starting at 14:30 and the race on Sunday (September 15) starting at 13:15.

Quotes by the officials

Dieter Gass (Head of DTM): “We’re looking toward Oschersleben with excitement. So far, we’ve been showing a consistently good performance this season and have always been far at the front with at least one driver. Building on this and putting as many cars as possible into the top group through a solid team performance has got to be the aim.”

Hans-Jürgen Abt (Team Director Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline): “We’re looking forward to Oschersleben. The track has suited our car well in the past and our drivers have clinched many victories there. We’d like to continue this and thus support Mike (Rockenfeller) in his battle for the DTM title as well.”

Ernst Moser (Team Director Audi Sport Team Phoenix): “Thinking of Oschersleben primarily brings back positive memories of this track. Mike (Rockenfeller) has mounted the podium there before and Miguel (Molina) has been on pole there once as well. Thus, I’m confident that we’ll be in contention in the race again.”

Arno Zensen (Team Director Audi Sport Team Rosberg): “We used the summer break to take a breather and to tackle the last three races with new momentum. My squad is looking forward to Oschersleben: New game, new luck.”

Facts and quotes by the Audi drivers

Filipe Albuquerque (28/P), Audi Financial Services RS 5 DTM #6 (Audi Sport Team Rosberg)
• At the Nürburgring, just barely missed scoring the first points this year
• Finished in the top ten at Oschersleben in 2012
“I know the track at Oschersleben well and drove there in junior categories before competing in the DTM. Our performance at the Nürburgring has encouraged us. I’m not giving up and will go all out to finally score my first points this season.”

Mattias Ekström (35/S), Red Bull Audi RS 5 DTM #11 (Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline)
• Won the race at Oschersleben two years ago
• Has mounted the podium four times in ten DTM runs at Oschersleben to date
“Oschersleben has been both good and bad to me in all these years. With only three more races to go you can tell how the level of suspense is rising a bit with everybody – that’s good I think. I’m still lacking a real victory this year and I’m going to continue to battle for this.”

Jamie Green (31/GB), Red Bull Audi RS 5 DTM #12 (Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline)
• Most recently finished in the points twice in succession
• Has been on podium at Oschersleben three times before
“Predictions are extremely difficult this season. I’d like to work with concentration, continue to improve and be back on podium as soon as possible.”

Miguel Molina (24/E), Audi RS 5 DTM #20 (Audi Sport Team Phoenix)
• Started from the pole position at Oschersleben in 2011
• Scored his first points in the 2013 season at the Nürburgring
“Following the upward trend at the Nürburgring, I’m now all the more excited about Oschersleben. This track has a special meaning for me because this is where I clinched my first pole position two years ago.”

Edoardo Mortara (26/F/I), Playboy Audi RS 5 DTM #5 (Audi Sport Team Rosberg)
• Was on podium at Oschersleben in his debut year of 2011
• Started the race at the Nürburgring from the second row
“Even though Oschersleben isn’t exactly my favorite track I believe that we’ll be competitive. I’m wishing for a better weekend than the first seven this year. The summer break has been good for taking a breather again.”

Mike Rockenfeller (29/D), Schaeffler Audi RS 5 DTM #19 (Audi Sport Team Phoenix)
• Claimed the first podium position in his DTM career at Oschersleben
• Has been one of the two drivers to score points in all races of the season to date
“Oschersleben is very challenging in terms of driving skills and very rough on the car as well. I’ve always enjoyed the track. We’re working on being well sorted again and starting the weekend with a good basic set-up. I’m looking forward to Oschersleben and am eager to see how the relative strengths will pan out.”

Timo Scheider (34/D), AUTO TEST Audi RS 5 DTM #23 (Audi Sport Team Abt)
• Scored his first-ever DTM race win at Oschersleben in 2008
• Has 13 starts at Oschersleben under his belt – more than any other driver in the field
“Of course Oschersleben immediately makes me think of my first DTM victory, which I clinched in 2008 and that was a big step toward the subsequent title win. I used the summer break to clear my mind again after all the previous misfortune. That has worked well, so I’m traveling to Oschersleben with the resulting motivation.”

Adrien Tambay (22/F), Audi ultra RS 5 DTM #24 (Audi Sport Team Abt)
• At the Nürburgring, finished in the points for the second time in 2013
• Is the third-best Audi driver in the standings three races before the end of the season
“Oschersleben is a nice race track. Last year, I was a bit unfortunate in the race. Hopefully, that’ll be different this time. My aim, again, is a good result in the points.”

Following the commanding one-two-three victory in the previous round at Zandvoort, Audi occupied positions six, eight, nine and ten after having suffered a lot of misfortune on the starting lap. In front of 71,000 spectators, Mike Rockenfeller, in sixth place, was the best-placed Audi driver. Mattias Ekström stopped at the start and dropped from fifth to 19th place. Afterward, he was the fastest driver in the field some of the time, recovered one position after another and advanced into the points again. In the end, Ekström took eighth place. Filipe Albuquerque, in ninth place, scored two points. One point, for tenth place, remained for Timo Scheider.

Timo Scheider about Oschersleben: “There’s hardly any other track in my book that combines so many different characters of turns. With the artificial braking chicane in turn 1 an additional opportunity for overtaking has been created. The ultra-fast right-left-right chicane on the other side of the track eats a lot of material but also requires great sensitivity. If you run the curbs a bit too hard you might damage the car or careen off the track. There’s a slow hairpin, an ultra-long 180-degree turn, a fast and a slow chicane and in the infield there’s even a banked corner. I’ll never forget the day of my first DTM victory at Oschersleben in 2008 – that’s when a big load came off my chest after all those years. All this combined makes Oschersleben so special for me.”
